Visit Place Patton, Avranches, France

Place Patton celebrates the memory of the American general George Patton (1885-1945), liberator Avranches during the Second World War. The houses and shops in this square were completely destroyed in 1944. During the Reconstruction, the crossroads was redeveloped into a roundabout and bordered by buildings. The Patton monument is erected there. A Sherman M4 tank was installed in February 1989 On September 10, 1994, in the presence of René André deputy-mayor, Guénhaël Huet general counselor, war memories of 300 American veterans are deposited in five copper urns, in a vault at the foot of the monument. Near the monument, a bronze bust of General Patton in tanker uniforms (signed Cogné, foundry of Caron art 2004) was added during the 60th anniversary of the Liberation. The plaque "406th Fighter group Plaque" is in memory of the men of the 406th Fighter Group who contributed to the final victory.
