Visit Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon straddles the Willamette River near its confluence with the Columbia River in western Oregon. In addition to the scenic riverfront, Mt. Hood, just east of the city, provides a perfect backdrop to the city skyline. The architecture of the city is an interesting blend of historic and modern and the inhabitants are known for their environmental efforts toward recycling, the use of public transportation and sustainable agriculture. Portland is nicknamed “The City of Roses” as The International Rose Test Garden is domiciled here attracting thousands of visitors annually to its 8,000 rose bushes and spectacular vistas as well as having the perfect climate for cultivation of the coveted plants. Many visitors to Portland also take time to visit the Lan Su Chinese Garden, an authentic Ming Dynasty style garden, with its attractive covered walkways, bridges and richly planted landscape. Portland is home to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, one of the leading science museums with hundreds of interactive displays and exhibits. The Oregon Zoo, located in Washington Park, exhibits over 2,000 animals from all corners of the earth. The Portland Art Museum, the oldest museum in the northwest, has an incredible permanent exhibit of Native American art as well 6 floors of modern art and roving exhibitions. Perched 1,000 feet above the city skyline is the Pittock Mansion, a more than 100 year old monument to the transformation of Portland from a small lumber town to the bustling metropolis it is today. The grounds of the mansion provide for a breathtaking vista. A number of microbreweries are domiciled in Portland with opportunities for tours and tastings and Portland is a gateway to the wine making region of the Willamette Valley that has become world famous. The Portland area affords wonderful opportunities for hiking, biking, golf, alpine and cross country skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing, water sports and fishing. A number of annual walks, runs, rides and triathlons have become engrained into the local culture. When the sun goes down the city comes alive with its generous offering of theaters, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Portland has an entry in the National Basketball Association, the Trailblazers, playing their home games at the aptly named “Rose Garden” arena.
