View Original Description
Portorož (Port of Roses) is a coastal town in southwestern Slovenia and is one of the country's largest tourist areas.
Portorož is closely connected to nearby Piran, a small medieval town whose fame and fortune come from one of the largest saltpans in this part of the world. While mostly abandoned today, the saltpans now provide shelter to numerous bird species to nest or stop during southbound migration.
It was when the healing properties of saltpans natural elements were discoverd that Portorož got its first hotels and thermal centres in the 19th century.
If you search for sandy beaches don't go to Portoroz. The beach in Portorož is not much of a beach - a mix of sand and rocks. But you can find a few nice places to lay out.
The city include a marina, several casinos, and numerous sporting facilities.
Portorož hosts annual Festival of Slovenian Film (Festival slovenskega filma) with Vesna awards being awarded for best achievements in Slovenian cinematography.
