Poverty Flatis has ruins at the southern end of Coyote Buttes, Arizona. It has an old windmill and rusty cars.
To access Poverty Flat take Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079) near the soutern part of House Rock Valley Road. From the north take House Rock Valley Road 16.5 miles to Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079) and turn left. If coming from the south at 89A take House Rock Road 13.2 miles north to Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079). It's 5.4 miles to Poverty Flat, which is the turn offs to Cottonwood Cove and White Pocket. High clearance 4WD required.
You must have a permit to visit Coyote Buttes South. Permits are available for day use only. There is a daily limit on permits. In December, January, and February Coyote Buttes South online permits rarely sell out quickly. Walk in permits are also available the day before you wish to hike via lottery at the Grand Staircase Escalante NM visitor center in Kanab. Unsold same-day or next day permits are available either in Kanab or at the Paria contact station near milepost 20 on Highway 89.
