Visit Prison without Doors (Museo de Mulegé), Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico

This territorial prison was erected on the hill above Mulegé in 1907. But this prison was different. The doors were open during the day. The inmates were allowed to leave each morning to work in town as long as they returned when the horn was sounded each afternoon. Jail without doors?? Yes, it's true. It was active as a jail until the mid-70s, and today it is a museum. "Prisoners" in "good standing" were able to leave during the day, work, raise families, etc... (no alcohol!) they just had to return at night. It worked because it was the Sea of Cortez on one side, and then road-less (not road-less anymore) desert on the other, so really no place to escape to.
