Visit Roan Head Rocket Launcher Site, Isle of Flotta, Orkney, Scotland

This remarkable site is the location of 32 early unrotated projectile (UP) or rocket launchers, designed as an anti-aircraft defence. Each launcher (now removed) would have been located on a circular holdfast fixed in concrete, and surrounded by a number of ammunition shelters. It is these distinctive almost semi-circular concrete covered corrugated iron structures that remain in varying degrees of preservation. The site is likely to have entered into operation in 1943 (November 1942 reports state it was not operational at this stage). There are a large number of military remains on this penisula including a WW1 coastal artillery battery, a large WW2 recreational facility, cable landing station and dummy anti-aircraft decoy site.
