Sandy Cay, British Virgin Islands (BVI)
View Original Description
Sandy Cay is an uninhabited island of the British Virgin Islands located between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke (about 1 mile off Little Jost Harbour). You can anchor off the island and dinghy or swim ashore. There is no beach bar or anything similar on the island, though it is a very popular stopping point for boats in the area.
The island has a short hiking trail. Make sure to bring proper foot wear for this short walk since there is coral and cactus along the path. The Jost van Dykes Preservation Society (JVDPS) sponsors regular visits from Little Harbour on Jost van Dykes to maintain the trail, do frequent bird counts and remove trash.
The reefs off Sandy Cay have a variety of juvenile fish life and rare Staghorn and Elkhorn Coral.
There are 7 day moorings available and anchoring is also good on the west side of the island. Anchoring must be done outside of the large yellow bouy.
The rocks on the island have a greenish colour from copper ore deposits. The island also contains a small salt pond in its centre.
The island was owned by the Laurance Rockefeller Estate. On 1 May 2008, ownership of the island was transferred to the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands.
