Visit
Santorini Island (Thíra), Greece
View Original Description
Walking through the narrow streets of the picturesque Greek Island of Santorini you will likely smell a heavenly mixture of olive oil, mint, and wine in the air. The islands whitewashed houses framed by bougainvillea spill down the rim of this ancient volcanic crater. You’d never really know that a volcano last erupted on this island in 1956. Though some of the most interesting things to do and see are as a result of that volcano. In Akrotiri you can see the remains of the ancient Thira (Santorini) that had been covered in lava over a 1,000 years ago. If you want to see what a volcano looks like under water you can take a submarine ride.
There are also many other ways to enjoy Santorini and you’ll probably want to rent a motorbike to get around the island with ease. Consider visiting one of the island’s many beaches. If you want a destination that offers beach sports, restaurants, and bars, visit Perissa. Looking for something more remote, then visit Red Beach. It’s a little hidden, but quite a gem. Go see a Sunset at Oia Village for one of the best views in the world.
