Seattle, Washington
View Original Description
The Emerald City, as Seattle, Washington is affectionately known by the locals with the focus on its evergreen landscape, is a major seaport in the United States, its northernmost major city and the major economic, cultural and educational center of the Pacific Northwest. Seattle was first visited by Europeans in 1792 but Native Americans have inhabited the region for over 4,000 years. This Native American influence can be found in much of the culture of Seattle and the name of the city is actually a bow to Chief Seattle of the Duwamish American Indian tribe who was known for his accommodative perspective toward the white settlers.
Seattle is surrounded by some of nature’s best efforts such as Elliott Bay, Lake Washington, Lake Union, Green Lake, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. Spectacular views abound and many of the restaurants and hotels are situated to take advantage of the dramatic outlooks available. Seattle is the home of the world famous Pike Street Market where rowdy fishmongers are the highlight of this over 100 year old marketplace. The city is where household names such as Starbucks, Boeing, Nordstrom and Microsoft originally developed. Sailing and power boating is a favorite pursuit due to the access to both fresh and salt water recreation areas and snow skiing is available only about an hour’s drive from downtown Seattle. Across Puget Sound from Seattle are a number of island and western Washington communities that are served by regular ferry service from the downtown terminal. Rides to and from these scenic spots afford some of the most fantastic views of nature’s landmarks and the Seattle skyline and the ports of call offer their own attractions worthy of your exploration.
Seattle prides itself on developing its own taste for the arts and the offerings for quality displays include sculpture gardens and galleries throughout the city. Seattle has a very strong music culture which is displayed in the more than 80 live music clubs and 15 different symphony orchestras native to the city. The Seattle International Film Festival in May and June presents cutting edge films from all over the world. “Bumbershoot”, Seattle’s music and arts festival held the first weekend of each September attracts headline performers and attendees from the far corners of the globe. “Seafair”, a huge 2 month long summer festival complete with parades, athletic events, hydroplane races and air shows has developed a huge fan base among locals and visitors. Seattle has a Major League Baseball team, The Mariners, a National Football League team, The Seahawks and a Major League Soccer team, The Sounders. Their home fields are located just south of the downtown area near Pioneer Square.
If you have dreamed of visiting a modern city with an emphasis on art and culture that has an abundant supply of fresh, local seafood, incredible views and has access to a multitude of recreational activities then a trip to Seattle, Washington belongs on your list.
