Visit Sevilla (Seville), Spain (UNESCO sites)

Seville is the cultural and financial center of southern Spain as well as the capital of the Andalucía region. Andalucía has a rich Moorish heritage which is displayed in the architecture and customs of the region. The city of Seville straddles the banks of the Guadalquivir River, dividing the city into two parts. The river has had significant influence on the history of Seville, with the mouth of the river having been a major trading port in ancient times. Among the most frequently visited sites in Seville is the Cathedral of Seville, by some measures the largest church in the world. This 15th century Christian Cathedral occupies the site of a 12th century Great Mosque. The Cathedral provides the final resting place for the remains of the explorer, Christopher Columbus. The ancient minaret from the Great Mosque is now the bell tower for the Cathedral and is known as La Geraldo. One of the best views of the city can be obtained by climbing the 34 levels to the tower’s peak. Barrio Santa Cruz, the Jewish Quarter that surrounds the Cathedral is thought to be the area presenting the most charm. The Real Alcazar, a stunning palace of extravagant Moorish design, contains courtyards, lavish gardens, pools, secret rooms and passageways, all waiting to be explored. Hospital de los Venerable, a 17th century retirement home and care facility for priests contains a stunning Baroque chapel which serves as a significant contribution to the preservation of Andalucian architecture. Parquet Maria Luisa, built in conjunction with the World’s Fair, held in Seville in 1929 is artistically landscaped with monuments and museums. The Plaza de Espuma, home of the Spanish pavilion for that 1929 exhibition has been used for filming of episodes of the Star Wars series. Museums and galleries that attract visitors attention include Muse de Belles Arts, considered to be the 2nd most important museum of fine arts in all of Spain, the Muse de Bailer Flamenco, a famous Flamenco dance museum in the heart of historical Barrio Santa Cruz and Muse de Carriages, a tribute to carriages of every kind. Options for entertainment abound in Seville. Flamenco performances, lessons and music are presented at a number of venues. Bull Fights at the Plaza de Toro de la Real Maestranza are held in what is considered the most beautiful bull fighting arena in Spain. Open air markets are another diversion for tourists held in various spots around the city. A visit to Seville in the Andalucia region of Spain may be the missing item from your list that will make your dreams come true. You can experience the rich culture of this vibrant city once you complete your plans.
