Shanghai, China
View Original Description
Located in Eastern China at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai was once a fishing town. That changed during the 19thcentury when it became a popular port. As the city became more prominent and populated it began to evolve. Today, Shanghai is a city with a rich heritage and a culture that blends the more traditional Chinese ways with Western style. It is evident in the skyline that mixes old architecture with modern buildings and the variety of people seen walking in the street. At any given moment there may be a women dressed in the latest fashion and another lady wearing pajamas. That’s why Shanghai is best explored on foot. Some of the best people watching, though a bit touristy, can be found walking down the Bund riverfront. It has recently been updated for the 2010 World Expo.
Art Deco is a popular building style in Shanghai since the construction boom happened during the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the more famous Art Deco buildings are the Peace Hotel, the Grand Theater, and the Broadway Mansions. There are also plenty of historical places to see including the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao with houses that date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, City God Temple, and Yuyuan Garden. Shanghai is an eclectic city that becomes more enchanting with each passing year.
