Skerry Battery, Orkney, Scotland
View Original Description
Skerry Battery is a Second World War coastal artillery emplacement that was armed with two 12-pounder guns. It is situated on the western entrance to Scapa Flow and formed part of the key defences for the British naval fleet when harbouring in the Flow. It is remarkably complete and in excellent condition, resulting in its statutory protection as a designated scheduled monument.
The site consists of a Battery Observation Post (BOP), two covered 12-pounder emplacements, two searchlight emplacements, an engine house, crew shelter and two hardened Nissen huts, as well as a number of concrete bases from other temporary buildings.
