Soledad Peak & Burma Road, Santa Rosa Island, California
View Original Description
Soledad Mountain/Peak, Santa Rosa Island, is often mistaken for the highest point on the island. However, an unnamed peak about a mile to the west of Soledad is 1589 feet in elevation, while Soledad is a close second at 1574 feet in elevation.
Burma Road runs from Soledad Peak (once the site of a large radar dome, "El Balon"), to the west end fence at the Pocket Field gate. Its construction required a lot of dynamite, and Smitty was involved in the road's construction some time around World War II.
The road to China Camp comes off the Burma Road.
