Sorcerer's Cottage, Westfjords, Iceland
View Original Description
The Sorcerer's Cottage is part of the famous Icelandic Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft. The cottage portrays the home of an imaginary 17th Century man-of-mystery-and-magic. The location, however, is no accident, as Bjarnarfjörður was the real-life home of one of Iceland's most famous sorcerers, Svanur á Svanshóli, who was mentioned in one of the sagas.
One of the signs at the cottage's entrance says: "The aim of the cottage is to give visitors a chance to experience the living condition of the poor tenants who were the majority of those whipped or burned for practicing superstitious and simple magic."
