Visit St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine, Florida’s most famous resident, Ponce de Leon, believed that taking water from the Fountain of Youth, which springs up in St. Augustine, would keep the drinker eternally young. We now know that is not necessarily true, but a visit to St. Augustine can make you think time has stopped. The city claims to be the oldest town in the United States, having been established by Spaniards in 1565. Fort Matanzas, built by Spanish settlers in the 1740s awaits your visit along with a number of other buildings and museums honoring the storied history of the area. The impressive stone fortress stands today much as it did in the 18th century. The St. Augustine Lighthouse, one of only 6 in Florida that are open to the public, maintains a museum of the beacon’s more than 200 years and allows visitors to climb to the top to view the impressive coastline. And speaking of coastline; Visit one of St. Augustine’s beautiful beaches, such as Anastasia Island Beach, where you can spend the day fishing or taking in the sun’s rays on the white sand between dips in the Atlantic Ocean before heading out to one of the island’s restaurants for dinner. Besides St. Augustine’s rich history it is a magnet for golfers as the World Golf Village, constituting the host courses for the World Golf Hall of Fame is nearby as is the TPC at Sawgrass where the PGA Tour’s annual Player’s Championship is staged. If you enjoy golf, have an interest in history or just want to laze on the beach a trip to St. Augustine, Florida may be the secret to fulfilling your dream.
