Visit Stafkirkjan (the Stave Church), Heimaey Island, Iceland

The replica church was a three-year research and reconstruction project completed in 2000 as a gift to the Icelandic nation by Norway in commemoration of the thousand-year anniversary of Iceland’s conversion to Christianity. It includes a replica of the Norwegian medieval altarpiece of Saint Olav. The church is beautifully situated by the harbor of Vestmannaeyjabær in an area formed by lava from an unexpected 1973 eruption of Eldfell.
