Tammany (42nd NY) Regimental Monument, Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania
View Original Description
The monument to the 42nd New York Infantry Regiment is located in Gettysburg National Military Park (PA) on Hancock Avenue near the Copse of Trees -- "the High Water Mark of the Confederacy".
As shown above, the monument is topped by the figure of the Delaware Indian Chief Tammany, who sided with America during the Revolution and became the symbol for the powerful New York City political hall that raised the regiment during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
Comprising 197 soldiers at Gettysburg, the 42nd New York was then commanded by Colonel James E. Mallon.
