Explore Tunnel of Endless Love, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

Santa Cruz island is riddled with lava tubes. Lava tubes are natural conduits through which lava travels beneath the surface of a lava flow, expelled by a volcano during an eruption. They can be actively draining lava from a source, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased and the rock has cooled and left a long, cave-like channel. “The Tunnel of Endless Love” is a short walk from From Bellavista. There are several such tubes on the island but these are the most impressive, one of which is about a kilometer [1/2 mile] long and as high and wide as a subway tunnel. The tube got its name because of a heart-shaped hole in its roof. Guides with torches can be hired at Bellavista to explore these dark labyrinths.
