Visit Verkamp's Visitor Center, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Verkamp's Curios, which stands next to the Hopi House, was built by John Verkamp in 1905. He sold arts and crafts as well as souvenirs. Until September 2008, it was run by his descendants; in November 2008, the building reopened as a visitor center focusing on the history of the Grand Canyon Village community. At the information desk, National Park Service rangers and Grand Canyon Association staff will answer any questions you may have. Several ranger-conducted activities start here. The exhibits focus on the Grand Canyon Community - what it was like to live and work here on the brink of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. A walking history timeline on the floor leads visitors through the exhibits on a tour of the important moments in local, national and international history. The Grand Canyon Association store in Verkamp's Visitor Center features a wide variety of books, DVDs and gifts related to the canyon. Learn more about its geology, ecology, and human history, or find the perfect canyon related gift. The building is a wood-shingled, “modifiedmission” design with a roof that conducts rainwater to a cistern under the porch. The main floor contains the curio shop with storage rooms in the rear. The second floor contained family living quarters.
