Walden Overview (PCT), Anza, California
View Original Description
Trail angel Mary has created a tiny oasis for Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers. She named it Walden. Mary says, "Why Walden? 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Henry David Thoreau. Walt Whitman followed him two years later. I celebrate these two great American authors and have renamed my hiker oasis in honor of Thoreau's most famous work. - PCT 145 Trail Angel Mary"
Two posts with life size cut-outs of Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman and inspirational quotes below them are located adjacent to PCT 145 Little Free Library. A hiker stands by the library and browses a book on hiking in the Swiss alps.
Next to this is a patch of chaparral with two picnic tables and on the other side, a 550 gallon water tank.
Inspirational Quotes:
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
Henry David Thoreau, from Walden
I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.
...
Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.
Walt Whitman, from Leaves of Grass
