Washington, The District of Columbia (D.C.) is the capital of the United States of America and home to the three branches of the U.S. government. The District of Columbia was set aside in a mostly uninhabited location along the eastern seaboard of the USA as an independent district for the purpose of locating the nation’s capital in 1790. The city and district is now the center of the seventh largest metropolitan area in the country. In addition to the White House (the residence of the President of the United States), The United States Capitol (the meeting place of the U.S. Congress) and the United States Supreme Court Building, Washington D.C. is host to over 175 foreign embassies, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Pan American Health Organization and scores of other institutions, trade organizations and professional associations. Washington, D.C. is also home to scores of national monuments, memorials, museums and galleries treasured by the citizens of the U.S.A.
At the center of district is the National Mall, a large open, park-like area that is surrounded by many of the significant sites in Washington, D.C. Among the monuments of high-importance located along and within the National Mall are the Washington Monument, Jefferson Pier, the Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial and the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. In close proximity is found the Tidal Basin with its gift of rows of Japanese cherry blossom trees, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, George Mason Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the District of Columbia War Memorial.
In close proximity to the National Mall is found the National Archives with its important collection of the most significant historical documents for citizens of the U.S.A. and the Library of Congress with the largest library collection in the world comprised of over 147 million pieces. Nearby is found the Smithsonian Institution, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery as well as National Museums dedicated to Air and Space, Natural History, African Art, American History, Native American culture, the Holocaust, Asian art and culture and Art and Sculpture. Private institutions with other significant collections are also located nearby. The National Zoo and its impressive collection of animals from around the world may also be found in close by Woodley Park. Washington, D.C. is easily accessible from most of the large cities along the East coast of the United States by train, automobile or air travel. There are a number of nearby international airports that serve the area.
