Visit Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington is the 3rd most populous city and the capital of New Zealand. The city is relatively young to be a national capital reflecting that the first Europeans to settle in Wellington didn’t arrive until 1840. Wellington developed quickly and wrested the title as the capital of New Zealand from Auckland in 1841. The city is surrounded by a scenic harbor, verdant rolling hillsides, snow capped mountains and sandy beaches. The city is the center for the population on the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island. Tourism plays a large role in Wellington’s economy with a vibrant art’s scene, museums, zoos, cultural displays and festivals drawing visitors from all over the world. The Museum of Wellington City and Sea focuses on the heritage of Wellington. The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts displays some of the best artwork in New Zealand, many of the pieces by native artists. Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand provides a complete perspective on the history and lifestyle that makes New Zealand what it is today. The Wellington Zoo harbors over 400 animals with up close and personal encounters part of the experience. The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary with its indigenous species exhibits, Otari-Wilton’s Bush and its presentation of native New Zealand plants and flowers, The Stagland Wildlife Preserver just north of the city and Khandallah Park are other frequently visited spots favored by tourists. Wellington exhibits an eclectic mix of architecture from wooden houses built in the 19th century to Art Deco and Post Modern structures with a sprinkling of Italianate designs. Wellington possesses a lively dining scene with award-winning restaurants, many featuring up and coming New Zealand wine labels. The music venues, theaters and clubs remind visitors of cities much larger than Wellington and contribute to the city being included on a number of “best cities” in which to live lists. Should your idea of a dream vacation include a visit to a young, up and coming capital city then adding a trip to New Zealand and its capital, Wellington needs to be added to your list.
