Visit Whalers Bay Aircraft Hangar, Deception Island, Antarctica

A disused aircraft hanger (1961) sits on the edge of the flooded caldera at Whalers Bay, Deception Island. The first powered flight in Antarctica took off from this beach in 1928. A bright orange derelict airplane fuselage, which is that of a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter that belonged to the Royal Air Force, was recovered in 2004. Plans to restore the airplane and return it to the island have been made.
