Visit Yesnaby Anti-Aircraft Range, Orkney, Scotland

During the Second World War an anti-aircraft battery was built on the cliff top at Yesnaby as part of the defences of the Royal Navy base at Scapa Flow. The battery was manned by the Royal Navy and some traces of the wartime buildings remain. The site remains remarkable intact with a range of buildings, the concrete apron and a variety of holdfasts. The site would have operated a number of targeting and communication systems to simulate operational conditions on board the warships from which the sailors would have been stationed. There is also evidence of these systems, as well as a dedicated generator housing to power the equipment located 400m to the east of the firing point. Comparison between what remains today and images from the Imperial War Museum taken in June 1942 indicate the site was further developed later in the war.
