Walk along
Boardwalk Loop, Congaree National Park, Congaree National Park
View Original Description
Most visitors to Congaree National Park in Congaree National Park walk along the Boardwalk Loop, an elevated 2.4-mile (3.9 km) walkway through the swampy environment that protects delicate fungi and plant life at ground level. Use the self-guided brochure and listen for woodpeckers hammering away in the tall trees above.
The high boardwalk is raised nearly 6 feet above the forest floor, the elevated portion of the boardwalk winds through a diverse old-growth forest. Use the self-guided brochure and listen for woodpeckers hammering away in the tall trees above.
The high boardwalk passes through a primeval bald cypress and water tupelo forest. Cypress "knees" protrude from the forest floor creating a mystical aura. The knees, part of the tree's root system, are thought to help aerate the roots and to help anchor the cypress in the area's wet soil.
Canoe rides through the swamp are conducted for free Saturday and Sunday as staffing permits. Congaree boasts both the tallest (169 ft, 51.4m) and largest (42 cubic meters) Loblolly Pines (Pinus taeda) alive today.
Dogs are allowed on all trails including the Boardwalk. Dogs must be kept on a leash and attended at all times.
