Windsurf or Kitesurf Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is called “ Maui of the Caribbean” because it offers excellent wave windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions for almost half of the year. The winds blow an average of 15-20 knots throughout the year. There are three major windsurfing and kitesurfing areas in Puerto Rico: San Juan Area, the Northwest Coast and the South Coast San Juan area from Pine Grove beach near the airport all the way west to where Ocean Park runs into Condado at Parque del Indio. Punta Las Marías, between Ocean Park and Isla Verde, is a center of activity. Punta Las Marías is a great windsurfing and kitesurfing located about 10 km (6 miles) east from San Juan. The wide, sandy beaches of Punta Las Marías with its steady sideshore winds are perfect for all levels of wind and kitesurfing. There are windsurfing and kitesurfing shops and rentals are available. The Condado Lagoon, just behind the oceanfront strip of hotels, is also popular. The northwest of the island from Rincón to Isabela is another center for windsurfing, with strong winds throughout the year. Isabela is well known for its Fine Step Horses ("Caballos de Paso Fino") and its world class board, wind and kite surfing spots. The best time of year is December through April. The winds are pretty inconsistent in the 10 to 25-knot range and waves can be in the 6 foot range. July to September is flat-water season with steady 12 to 18 knots winds. The Hurricane season spans from June to November.
