Windsurf or Kitesurf
Zaafarana, Egypt
View Original Description
Zaafarana, Egypt, sometimes referred to as the “Egyptian Riviera”, is located on the Gulf of Suez, 219km south of Cairo and 240km north of Hurghada. Zaafarana's quiet sandy beach and adjacent shallow water lagoon protected by a sand spit is most often accompanied by a consistent cross wind that blows best from March to September creating a windsurfing and kiteboarding paradise. Only 500 meters offshore the shallow waters open up to choppy wave action of the Red Sea as the protected lagoon meets the open water. The lack of significant development in Zaafarana allows for the clean cross shore wind. The location is perfect for beginners just catching on to the sports or for the experienced fliers and sailors desirous of a reliable location to hone their skills. During low tide the protected shallow water is perfect for practicing freestyle maneuvers. Winds average in the range of 18 to 22 knots with air temperatures somewhat cooler than the rest of Egypt.
Access to Zaafarana is typically through airports in Cairo or Hurghada. Egypt has become popular with European kiteboarders and windsurfers due to the relatively short travel time to Egypt as compared to alternatives in other parts of the world. Rental cars, buses and taxis provide transportation while on the ground. A large beachfront resort is located in Zaafarana with kiteboarding and windsurfing support facilities along with lessons for all levels available and equipment rentals. There is also a nearby surf camp offering basic accommodations. Zaaafaran is home to the oldest monastery in the world with tours of the 1,600 year old site among popular diversions available in addition to the water focused activities.
Windsurfing or Kiteboarding on the Red Sea in Egypt might just be what you have been dreaming about. Add a trip to Zaafarana, Egypt to your list today to experience the perfect conditions in this historic part of the world.
