Windsurf or Kitesurf Anakao, Madagascar

Anakao is a small fishing village on the island country of Madagascar that fronts the Indian Ocean. A place where time seems to have stood still; where the local inhabitants look to the ocean as the source and meaning of life. The coastline at Anakao is almost constantly swept by the “Tsiokatimo”, meaning southern wind, which generates the propulsion necessary for unforgettable windsurfing and kiteboarding experiences. Life in Anakao is said to go slowly but the on-water experiences possible in this remote corner of the world are in great contrast to the lifestyle. The favorite wave for board riders is known as “Flameball” and an offshore protected reef called Nozi Ve that provides ample territory for freestyling beckons fliers and sailors. The village of Anakao is one of the rare locations on the planet to experience the merge of a tropical climate zone to a moderate zone as the Tropic of Cancer is delineated exactly here. The ocean in this region of Madagascar resembles a natural endless aquarium offering a very diverse choreography of dolphin, whales, multicolored fish, starfish, lobster and splendid coral. Anakao is best reached by boat from the larger town of Tulear (Toliara), although access by 4 wheel drive vehicle is also possible. Accommodations in the form of rustic bungalows along the beach are the rule. Restaurants provide local fare comprised of seafood, locally grown fruits and vegetables and rice dishes. Make sure you have your own gear and repair kits as a genuine lack of support facilities is the rule. There are some local tour operators to guide visitors around the region. Your dream of windsurfing or kiteboarding in an epic location that remains relatively undiscovered may be fulfilled by adding a trip to pursue your passion in Anakao, Madagascar. Plan your escape to this pristine location that time has forgotten.
