Windsurf or Kitesurf Lake Arenal, Costa Rica

Lying 110 kilometers from the San Jose airport in Costa Rica, Lake Arenal is the largest interior body of water in Costa Rica which enjoys a world-class reputation as a first rate location among windsurfers and kiteboarders. Dependable winds blow from Mid-November through April allowing for high wind jumps and bump sailing on the not uncommon 8 meter swells in the lake’s typically warm water. Wind speeds run in the 20-30 knots range during peak season. With a surface area over 85 square kilometers there is ample room to perfect or develop your skills. Equipment rentals and lessons are easily arranged lakeside. Situated at the foot of Arenal Volcano, one of the most active in South America, it’s not unusual to be treated to a pyrotechnic show of glowing rock and lava freely flowing on the horizon while on the lake. Rainforests and jungles come right to water’s edge providing unlimited opportunities for hiking and mountain biking in addition to other on-water activities including a burgeoning explosion of wakeboarding, fishing and kayaking if a diversion is desired from the wind and kite surfing. Flights into either San Jose orLiberia (Liberia is closer to the lake but more flights are available in and out of San Jose) provide access to Lake Arenal.
