Wine Taste at
Viña Santa Carolina, Maipo Valley, Chile
View Original Description
Winner of Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year in 2015, this property is actually quite old. Viña Santa Carolina was founded in 1875, in Santiago, by Luis Pereira Cotapos, who named it Santa Carolina Vineyard by his wife, Carolina Iñiguez.
The original vineyard occupied a large plot in the rural area immediately south of the city of Santiago at that time, ranging from the current construction of the corridor Vicuña Mackenna to Pedro de Valdivia and to the Zanjón de la Aguada in the south. The vineyard lasted until 1967 when the last harvest was made in nearby vineyards, before being eliminated by real estate growth pressures of the city. However, the wineries continued in use to process and age the wines now coming from other vineyards of the valley.
The winery has a strong focus on reds, given its location in the Maipo Valley and vineyards in Cachapoal and Colchagua They do make whites from the cooler valleys of Casablanca and Leyda near the coast.
