Wine Tasting in
California's Central Coast
View Original Description
There is a strip of coastal land in California stretching nearly 250 miles approximately 25 miles wide and is planted to over 90,000 acres of wine grapes. This area generates nearly 15% of California’s total wine production and is home to over 360 wineries. Referred to as California’s Central Coast this far ranging region boasts the perfect weather and geography for viticulture. The majority of the wine making in this region is concentrated in four California counties: Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. As you journey through stands of old oaks, rolling hills with grazing cattle and farms planted to row crops between the grand vineyards it’s hard to reconcile that you are in the middle of the most populous State in the U.S.A.. The wineries tend to be located in clusters along the historic Highway 101 that runs the length of California and opportunities to visit coastal towns with idyllic beachfronts present themselves between visits to the tasting rooms.
Wineries may be easily accessed from the cities of Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Monterey and San Luis Obispo and a dream fulfilled for many wine enthusiasts would include visits to as many cellars for wine tasting as possible with romantic evenings spent in the quaint dining rooms of some of the historic inns that dot the landscape. Add a trip to the California Central Coast for wine touring to your list to experience all this breathtaking area has to offer.
