Wine Tasting in
Cape Winelands, South Africa
View Original Description
Less than an hour’s drive separates Cape Town from the premier wine producing region in South Africa. Referred to as the Cape Winelands, winemaking has been part of the local scene since the Dutch pressed the first grapes here in 1659. Settled by the French Huguenots over 300 years ago, the picturesque Franschhoek Wine Valley, in the heart of South Africa’s Cape Winelands, offers breathtaking scenery, gourmet cuisine and warm hospitality all in a small village atmosphere. The Huguenots discovered that the valley had a very similar climate as the premier wine producing regions in France and began in earnest to produce rivals to the classic styles of their homeland. World class Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir are among the wines produced at the cellars that call this part of South Africa home. A local favorite is produced from a grape known as “Pinotage” a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Hermitage vines.
A trip to South Africa to discover the rich history of its winemaking could be the trip about which you have been dreaming. Escorted tours to the Cape Winelands wineries are easily arranged and may even be combined with safari extensions into the famous Kruger National Park that provides for the ultimate South African wildlife experience. Make an entry on your list to visit Cape Winelands to discover much of what South Africa has to offer.
