Wine Tasting in Mosel Region, Germany

The 3rd largest wine producing region in Germany, Mosel, takes its name from the Moselle River, which it straddles. Although not the largest, Mosel is the most prestigious and internationally well known wine producing area in Germany. It is thought that the Romans started the first vineyard in Mosel in the 2nd century. Thousand of years later the Germans have perfected the art of turning grapes into wine as the product of Mosel’s vineyards will provide proof. The vineyards of Mosel are spread across 3 sections, The Upper, Middle and Lower Mosel and because of the steep slopes upon which the vines are planted the vineyards are some of the most unique in the world in the way the grapes are grown and harvested using minimal machinery. The predominant grape in Mosel is the Riesling comprising nearly 60% of the plantings in what is mostly a white wine producing region. The most notable vineyards in Mosel are located in the Mittelmosel (middle) which produce the regions richest and most full bodied wines. One who appreciates fine wine and dreams of visiting the world’s greatest wine producing areas must include a trip to Mosel on their list. Organized and self guided tours of the wineries are excellent ways to experience all that the region has to offer. Public and private transportation can provide comfortable access from Frankfurt and touring the medieval castles and villages along the way makes for a trip worth fantasizing about.
