Wine Tasting in
Provence, France
View Original Description
Provence is an area of France located south of the Italian Alps with a culture heavily influenced by its varied inhabitants over the centuries including the ancient Greeks, Romans, Gauls, Catalans and Savoyards. Each had their preference for wine grapes and the broad variety of viticulture that exists in Provence today can be attributed to the influence of these residents with a winemaking history that stretches over 2,600 years. Nearly 1,000 types of wines are bottled in Provence, reflecting the broad cultural influence and varied tastes. Most wine bottled from this region is primarily from the Rose’ family, accounting for nearly 90% of the production. The French city of Marseilles is at the center of Provence which provides a great hub for exploring the estates and vineyards spread across the countryside. The region boasts an arid climate and beautiful hillside villages
Wine tasting excursions can include several stops at small, private wineries where the experience is professional and focused or may include “cave cooperatives” that provide an opportunity to taste wines from a number of local vintners in a more casual atmosphere. Serious wine connoisseurs or casual lovers of good wines will want to include a dream fulfilling trip to the Provence region of France on their list.
