Wine Tasting in
Southern Uruguay
View Original Description
If visiting the country of Uruguay is on your bucket list and you are a wine lover understand that wine tasting in southern uruguay is growing in popularity among wine tourists looking for that next, great wine producing region. Primarily, production is from the local Tannat grapes that were introduced to Uruguay in the late 1800’s by a Basque immigrant. The vineyards of Uruguay have reminded visitors of plantings in Tuscany or France with vines located on rocky hillsides as well as rolling valleys. Maturing Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines in concert with their white counterparts, Chardonnay and Gewurtztraminer are just adding to the selection of quality produce from this lesser known wine producing region. Tasting tours from the capital city of Montevideo, where more than 50% of the country’s population resides, or the port city of Colonia, near to Buenos Aires, Argentina are readily available and can include adventures such as horseback riding, fishing and golf in the picturesque countryside of this beautiful country.
About 90 percent of the land planted with grapes is located in the southern region, mostly north of of the capital Montevideo.
Uruguay is especially suited for producing wine because of its privileged location and particularly suited land for grape cultivation. Uruguay is situated in a typical warm sub tropical area, between 30 and 35 degrees south, at the same latitude as the best grape growing regions of Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
