Stop At: Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann, Kutch India
White Rann is a hypnotic salt desert that stretches all the way from Gujarat’s Kutch district to Pakistan’s Sindh province, covering around 12 000 sq. miles Also known as the Great Rann of Kutch, it adjoins the Little Rann of Kutch. These together make up the world’s largest salt marsh.
Kutch, India’s Wild West, is a geographic phenomenon. The flat, tortoise-shaped land, edged by the Gulf of Kutch and Great and Little Ranns, is a seasonal island. During the dry season, the Ranns are vast expanses of dried mud and blinding-white salt. Come the monsoon (rainy season from July-September), they are flooded first by seawater, then by fresh river water. The salt in the soil makes the low lying marsh area almost completely barren. Only on scattered ‘islands’ (called beyts in local language) above the salt level is there coarse grass, which provides fodder for the region’s wildlife.
Located in the Little Rann of Kutch is the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary. This barren, salt-tinted land is nature at its harshest and most compelling. The Wild Ass Sanctuary, covering a large part of the Rann, is the home of the last remaining population of the chestnut-coloured Indian Wild Ass (khur). The sanctuary is also home to 32 mammal species and is an important breeding site for birds. Unlike most of the wildlife sanctuaries in India, this reserve is a desert with parched grasslands that are just right for the animals who reside here. The grasslands are said to feed at least 2 100 animals. It can be an out of box experience for wildlife lovers, as this sanctuary is unique in several aspects like landscape, flora and fauna.
