This is the best place to see wildlife in the northern region of Costa Rica, but what makes this area so especial to observe wildlife? Caño Negro are protected wetlands not only by the government of Costa Rica there are non-governmental ORG´s like RAMSAR giving it a category as one of the most important wetlands in the world, that´s because this aquatic ecosystem is home of many endangered species such like the garfish, spider monkey, the tapir, the jaguar the Jabiru. Also it is one of the favorite wetlands for all aquatic migratory birds like ducks, egrets, herons and raptors.
Caño Negro it´s 2hrs from La Fortuna once we get to town we make a short walk to get to the boat that will take us over the float land when we are able to point all diverse animals where monkeys, caimans, Jesus Christ lizards and many birds species are easy to watch, Caño Negro it´s fill or surprises. A stunning natural refuge, Caño Negro is considered by many to be the third most important wetland in the world. A must visit place when in Costa Rica, this sanctuary was named the ‘Wetland of International Importance’ in 1991, and is one of the most significant humid zones in the country. Designated a ‘world protected area’ by conservation groups like Ramsar; Caño Negro is home to a number of the world’s rare plant, animal and bird species.
