Évora is the capital of the south-central region of Portugal, the Alentejo. In the historic center of the city is the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also known as Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround the Cathedral of Évora, an enormous Gothic structure begun in the 12th century. The Church of San Francisco has Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Chapel of Bones, decorated with bones.
