5 Days Colombian Caribbean Playground: Capurganá, Panama, Turtles

A simply fantastico 5 days full of the Caribbean Ocean, espectacular beaches, tropical jungles, leatherback turtles, and an immersion into the Afro-Colombian Community, or travel to a Kuna Indigenous Village in Panama!

Spend a night watching giant leatherback turtles climbing awkwardly up the beach to lay their eggs under the protection of the moonlight sky.

Enjoy the Tropical Caribbean lifestyle visiting amazing beaches during the day and falling asleep at night to the sounds of the waves splashing against the beach, a stone’s throw from your bedroom window.

Itinerary

Day 1: Acandí, Colombia

Stop At: Acandi, Acandi, Choco Department
Starting in Acandí you’ll take a short ride on the back of a motorbike for around 15 minutes’ to Playon Beach.
Once here you’ll be greeted by your hosts with a coconut freshly opened to provide you with a wonderful rehydrating drink of coconut water.
You’ll then be shown to your cabin on the beach to relax and unwind before enjoying a typical lunch from the region.
Your hosts are all part of an Afro-Colombian foundation called Mamá Basilia. A non-profit organization dedicated to the survival and conservation of the magnificent Leatherback Turtle.

Dinner will be approximately 7 pm followed by a talk about the Leatherback Turtles and what you can expect in the following tour starting in an hour or so.

Day 2: Capurgana

Stop At: Acandi, Acandi, Choco Department
Depending on the date of your tour you may also wake to enjoy this morning watching hatchlings crawling out of the sand and struggling down the beach to the waiting ocean.
Duration: 5 hours

Stop At: Capurgana, Capurgana, Choco Department
Approximately mid-morning you’ll start making your way to Capurgana and your beachside lodge. Once here you’ll enjoy some lunch and relax with a swim in the ocean, walk along the beach, try a bit of snorkeling, or maybe take a short walk to Aguacate Bay for a swim and some relaxation.

Day 3: Sapzurro & La Miel (Panama)

Stop At: Sapzurro, Acandí, Choco, Colombia
Following breakfast, you’ll be taking a boat to the beautiful small town of Sapzurro. The last settlement on the Colombian side of the border with Panama and a fantastico location to enjoy some beach time along with some of the natural beauty offered by the Darien Jungle at your back.
During the tropical rainy season (May to November) you’ll also have the opportunity to take a walk to the Diana Waterfalls, where you’ll also get to hear (and hopefully see) some wonderful howler monkeys.

Stop At: La Miel, La Miel, Herrera Province
Following some lunch, you’ll climb up the hill separating the two countries and enjoy a wonderful view into both Colombia and Panama, before making your way down into Panama and into another wonderful small town, called La Miel.
Here you’ll enjoy more beach time on this white and sandy beach, along with a relaxing walk through this sleepy Caribbean village, before taking a boat back to your lodge in Capurgana.

Day 4: Playa de Soledad

Stop At: Capurgana, Capurgana, Choco Department
Just a 30min boat ride from the lodge you’ll discover the quiet hamlet of Playa Soledad. With beautiful fine white sand and just a couple of small shacks selling coconuts, you'll be glad we've packed a picnic lunch for the trip.

Surrounded by mangroves, palm trees, and Darien Jungle, you'll love relaxing in the beautiful crystal-clear waters and soaking up the sun on this beach.

You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy some fantastico snorkeling in these crystal clear waters around the colorful coral reefs.

Day 5: Time to Say Goodbye
