Since 1987, set in the heart of the city, the Musée d'Aquitaine retraces the history of the region, from prehistory through to the present day. The museum exposes rich regional and extra-european collections of archeology, history and ethnography. This "Museum of civilization" presents each years several temporary exhibitions about history and cultures of the world. It offers to public a varied cultural programming: lectures, screenings, round tables, guided tours, concerts, meetings with foreign communities, educational workshops... A private 18th century mansion has been transformed into the Decorative Arts Museum and Design. It presents a collection of furniture, ceramics, glass, gold, tapestries and a large Design section. At the rear, a former municipal prison has just been made into an exhibition room.

Situated to the south-east of the chevet of the Cathedral of Saint-André at Bordeaux, the tower of Pey-Berland serves as its bell tower, built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. Its isolation was due to the wish to provide the Cathedral with magnificent bells which would not threaten the structure with their vibrations. Designated world heritage site by UNESCO.

The Port Cailhau, thirty-five metres tall, was integrated into the city walls. In 1864, it was rented by a public letter writer and a person whose job was to weigh salt. They were both evicted in order to renovate the monument. There is a magnificent view of the oldest bridge in Bordeaux, the Pont de Pierre, from here.

This site is probably the cradle of Christianity in Bordeaux, in the Gallo-Roman era. In 1910, excavations in front of the basilica revealed a vast Christian necropolis with rows of graves in layers in the ground, ranging from the 4th to the 18th century. Charlemagne is said to have buried his brave knights who were killed in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Recounting the evolution of one of the oldest French administrations, the collection evokes the technical nature of the confrontation between smugglers and customs officers. Equally instructive is the evolution of customs policies from antiquity to the present. Amongst fake paintings and other counterfeits, an authentic Monet: ‘The Customs House’.

Built in the 15th century, this fortified gateway was also a prison. The bell of the ancient belfry (7800 kg) sounded the big events of the city. The astronomical clock was built in 1759. The weather vane on the central dome represents a golden lion, one of the symbols of the Kings of England.
