Kirtipur is a medieval village located about 20 minutes drive from Kathmandu, steeped in long history, rich Newari art and culture and a perfect spot to watch the magnificent Himalayan peaks.  It  was a stronghold of Malla Kings from 15th-17th century during which period the art and architecture of Newari craftsman flourished. The temples, Buddhist monasteries, Chaityas, Stupas, stone sculpture still bear testimony to this rich era drawing thousands of visitors every year.

Kirtipur village has been able to maintain its rusty medieval look and a traditional lifestyle to the amazement of many a visitors. The narrow alleyways, wood-brick-mud houses, cobbled streets, wells, inns and the age old ritual of Newari people takes you back in time.

Uma Maheshwar and Bagbhairab are two most important temples here. Built in 1655 AD Uma Maheswar Temple is perched at an altitude of 1414m commanding a superb view of Himalayan peaks and Kathmandu city. The three storeys Bagbhairab Temple proudly showcases a collection of weapons that were used by Newar troops against the invading forces of King Prithivi Narayan Shah during the Battle of Kirtipur. Chilancho Stupa, Shri Kirti Bihar are also worth a visit.

A hike to nearby Chobhar Hill is surely not to be missed. Legend has it that Manjushree created the gorge using his sword to drain off the water from Kathmandu Valley to make it habitable.
