The origins of Chinchero are lost in the mists of time. It is believed to date back about two thousand years ago. The first inhabitants of the region were the Ayarmacas who, after suffering harassment from the Incas, defended their territory and offered great resistance before being incorporated into the empire. Chinchero was the site chosen by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui to establish his residence.
