Capo Passero is the extreme south-eastern tip of the island of Sicily and also the name of the islet located a few meters away. It is located in the territory of the municipality of Portopalo, in the province of Syracuse. The cape is dominated by a lighthouse.
In the 16th century, Capo Passero was the subject of intense Turkish-Barbary pirate activities. The pirates, in fact, at the cape supplied themselves with water and plundered the area, sometimes taking the Europeans they encountered into slavery. In 1607, the Forte di Capo Passero was completed, which had a defensive function at least until 1830. [1]
The town is famous for the naval battle, which took place in 1718, during which the Spanish fleet was defeated by the English fleet commanded by Admiral Sir George Byrn, making England part of the Quadruple Alliance (Austria, Great Britain, France and Bass).
