The Sanctuary of Fátima is one of the greatest references of the Marian cult, to which pilgrims from all over the world flock.
Batalha Monastery grew alongside the Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery, whose construction began in 1386, on August 14, 1385. On that day, not far from the place where this imposing monument stands today, D. João, Mestre de Avis, defeated the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota and saved national independence.
