Fontanellato: a castle and a labyrinth in Parma countryside

Two architectural wonders lie in the middle of Parma countryside, a few kilometers distant from each other.
The first is Rocca Sanvitale, a fortress standing in the middle of the village of Fontanellato, gradually become a pleasure residence for the ancient family who has owned it for more than six centuries.
The latter is the largest labyrinth in the world, dreamed and constructed by Franco Maria Ricci, a publisher and philanthropist whose astonishing art collection is kept in a gallery, at ht heart of the labyrinth itself.

The massive palace, surrounded by a moat, stands in the centre of the village of Fontanellato, about 30 km away from Parma. It has been the residence of Sanvitale family for more than six centuries, until the half of the 20th century. The interiors features precious frescoes by the Mannerist painter Francesco Mazzole, known as Parmigianino, while one of the corner towers was turned into an optical chamber at the end of the 19th century.
