Stop At: Bateria Angel San Rafael, Bocachica Tierra Bomba, Isla Tierra Bomba Colombia
We begin with the pick-up at your hotel, hostel, Airbnb or whatever location between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. In a mini van. You must be patient because traffic is a problem at some point, but don't worry. We will pick up other travelers too.
We start with a panoramic tour of the bay of Cartagena, 15 minutes by boat, we will be in the Ciénaga de la Viuda. The widow swamp, as it is called by the inhabitants of the area, is mostly made up of Red and White Mangroves and its depth is not more than 1 meter and a half.
It is distributed through natural mangroves that protect and give life to several species which can be seen normally in the morning, including herons, pelicans, mariamulatas, foxes and guacharacas.
In ancient times it was the refuge of ships entering and waiting to anchor. It is usual to see the occasional fisherman with hook and line every morning.
Entering we will find the community of Loro and the first Leprosy Hospital (Leprosario).
Then we will visit the forts and their buildings (which once protected Cartagena from pirates and English). The first fort we visited is that of the Battery of the Angel of San Rafael, built in the second half of the 18th century, its location stands out, which is surrounded by a narrow, but deep dry moat and the good condition of its cannons that protected the fortification.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Fort San Fernando de Bocahica, Bocachica, Provincia de Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia
The second fortification is the fort of San Fernando, built in the 18th century, replacing that of San Luis, which was destroyed by the English army. It has a horseshoe shape towards the sea. Inside, when you travel, you can see nine bomb-proof vaults and a hornabeque, consisting of two large bulwarks called the King and Queen, which by their outer extension served to keep the enemy at a greater distance and force him to increase his work.
You can still see paintings on the murals, including those of the redeeming Christ, the Galleon of San José and how they kept track of the hours, according to the level of the water in the reservoirs.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Fuerte-Batería de San José, Isla de Tierra Bomba, Provincia de Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia
The last fort to be visited is that of San José, which protected the access of pirates and invaders to the Bay of Cartagena, together with that of San Fernando.
It was the site of a large number of artillery pieces distributed in vaults, as well as gunpowder stores where they existed, about 21 guns that pointed to the ships that intended to enter through the Bocachica Canal.
Strong and Batteries visited:
1. Battery of the Angel San Rafael.
2. Fort San Fernando.
3. Fort San José.
Once the tour of the Military Forts is over, lunch will be taken.
You can choose lunch between typical fish, chicken or vegetarian and enjoy the quiet beaches that the place offers us.
The return is about 3:30 p.m. by boat to Cartagena.
