Izalco is one of the youngest volcanoes in the world and still active. Reaching its crater is a rewarding experience! Be prepared for steep slopes, lush cloud forests, challenging ground and (when Mother Nature's in the mood) stunning views.
Called "The Lighthouse of the Pacific" by ancient sailors, this young fella was in a constant eruption since late 1700s, spewing lava flows and debris until it reached an elevation of near 2000 m (6400+ ft).
This stratovolcano is classified as active. Near the crater you can still see fumaroles and, from the top, the solidified lava fields spewed during recent eruptions.

NOTE: this is a challenging hike, proper gear required for safety. Hiking boots/shoes, hydration, sun/rain protection and a good physical shape is a must. Trekking poles highly recommended.

In order to guarantee you an early departure, this tour must be booked -at least- with 7 days in advance.

Afternoon leisure time at Coatepeque lake private estate available upon request.

Itinerary

=> This is an early departure, not the 11 AM group-hike. Limited for small groups only <=

The hike to Izalco only runs on weekends with a fixed group-departure at 11 AM (the warmest hour) and sometimes it may get really crowded with tens of people joining. And the larger the group, the slower it goes.
As licensed guide I'm granted to depart as early as 9 AM every day of the week* so you skip the crowds, walk your own pace and take your time.
Don't worry for the noisy or slow walkers. You'll have the volcano almost all for your yourself.
The hike starts at Cerro Verde's visitors center. From here you walk -down the hill- across the dense cloud forest until reach the break with the lava fields. Get some rest before facing a more challenging ground and slope. Terrain is volcanic rocks and boulders. Once on the top you can easily circle the rim of the crater (w for the fumaroles).
Grab some snack and hydration to take the trail back to Cerro Verde.
Since Cerro Verde is a different volcano, at the end of the day you had conquered TWO VOLCANOES and can proudly say VENI, VIDI, VICI.
Go safe and skip the crowds!
