Imbros Gorge is located in province Sfakia and is the third most visited gorge in Crete, following Samaria Gorge and Agia Irini by Sougia, all belonging to the E4 European hiking path. The scenery is beautiful and the low difficulty make the descent of Imbros ideal for families with children. The length of the gorge is 11 km and the course lasts 2-3 hours.The route starts from the small village of Imbros, 700 meters above sea level.
In many parts of the gorge we meet traces of the old stone paved trail that was once the main passage from Sfakia to Chania.

Stop At: Fragokastello Beach, Sfakia, Greece
Fragokastello is located just outside of Sfakia. It was constructed in 1371 by the Venetians, and the legend says that the locals tried in every way to stop its erection by destroying in the evenings the parts built during the day. The name Fragokastello (the fortress of the Franks, ie the Catholics) was given to the new fort by the locals, reflecting and underlying their abhorrence.
Fragokastello however, became known because of the legend of Drosoulites, the Cretan soldiers who died in battle against the Turks and whose shadows ‘appear’ and haunt the fort even to this day…

Chora Sfakíon or Sfakia is a town on the south coast of Chania. It is the capital of the remote and mountainous region of Sfakia, and is a small town of just 278 inhabitants (2001 census). It lies on the south coast near the end of the Imbros Gorge, 74 km south of Chania. It has two small harbours, where the ferry boats from Agia Roumeli dock, which in the summer bring the hikers from the Samaria Gorge to take buses back to the northern coast. From Chora Sfakion ferries also run to the nearby coastal town of Loutro and the island of Gavdos. Chora Sfakion is a small village with a main harbourfront of tavernas, two minimarkets, a butcher and a bakery. There is also gas station, phone services, ATM, post office, police station and pharmacy.

Vrises is a village in Chania and also the capital in the municipality of Apokoronas. The village is built on the foothills of the White Mountains (equally known as Madares or Lefka Ori) at an altitude of 62 meters. It is 32 kilometers from Chania and the main occupation of the approximately 800 inhabitants is in agriculture, in animal husbandry and in cultivation of citrus and olives.

Plateau of Askifou is located 50km south of Chania, in one of the nicest and most authentic areas of Crete. The wild mountains around and the serenity of the valley, form a magnificent landscape all year round. In winter the plateau is dressed in white several times, since the altitude is around 1200 meters. The plateau brings a lake in mind from above and its name means “cup” in ancient Greek, because of its shape.
