India's Golden City - A Two Night Excursion To Jaisalmer From Jodhpur By Private Transfer

Your three day tour takes you from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, deep in the heart of the Thar Desert.  It is one of the last princely bastions in the region. Jaisalmer is located on the intersection of two medieval trade routes.  Known as the "Golden City," it is distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. This remote settlement came to be celebrated for the valour of its rulers, and for the aesthetic sense represented by their palaces and havelis. The rich merchants engaged stone-craftsmen who worked with great diligence on the sandstone mansions they built, decorating facades with sculptural filigree, screen windows, delicate pavilions and beautiful balconies.  You will see this unique desert city, its massive fort and magnificent architecture over the next few days.

Day 1: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer

This morning you will be picked up from your Jodhpur hotel and be driven in a private air conditioned vehicle to Jaisalmer (about 5 hours). This fascinating city rises from the heart of the Thar Desert like a golden mirage. Dominating the skyline is Jaisalmer Fort, a sprawling hilltop citadel etched in yellow sand-stone standing in awesome splendor.

Day 2 - Jaisalmer Sightseeing

After breakfast, you will visit the Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also goes by the name Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) as it rises from the desert and becomes one with the golden hues of the sand. The fort was constructed in 1156 in the then classic style of the royals by local craftsmen and is buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharaja's Palace and intricately carved Jain temples built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Natives of the city still live in the ancient havelis within this Fort. The afternoon winds down with a sunset camel ride in the picturesque dunes of Sam, where great photo opportunities abound as dancers and musicians perform on the wind-caressed sand dunes.
