Nrityagram has gained international acclaim as the first modern and exclusive Gurukul (residential school) for Indian Classical Dances. Designed by Gerard Da Cunha, the ethnic dance village offers training in Indian classical dance forms such as Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Kathak and others. Following the ancient guru-shishya ( teacher-student) tradition, students look after and care for their Guru (teacher) by growing fruit and vegetables on the land, cooking, cleaning and performing dance recitals. At Nrityagram, the institution fulfills the role of the Guru - as protector and as someone who makes available knowledge and experience.
Along with the intensive dance training, the students learn Indian Literature, mythology, poetry, Sanskrit, music, aesthetics and other subjects. Regular workshops are conducted. Since 1996, Nrityagram dance troupes have given performances across the globe.
